The Green Room Workshop

UNDERSTANDING ME...THE ACTOR, THE ROLE, THE INDIVIDUAL

This workshop will give actors perspective on how a clearer understanding of SELF gives actors a clearer understanding of their CHARACTERS. Our personalities, experiences, and patterns have everything to do with our character choices as we develop each ROLE we portray. Often ACTORS relate our personal victories, failures, accomplishments and tragedies to the journeys of our characters. But how can ACTORS successfully channel those emotions when developing a character, when INDIVIDUALS work so hard to mask, hide, and cover our emotions in our daily lives? When you have a clear understanding of yourself...it gives you a clear understanding of the role that you're portraying.

A hopeless romantic who has never found love, a trait he attributes to his hearing impairment, Jack is searching for an answer to his dilemma now that he has re-gained his ability to hear. MAJOR ROLE

[ELLIOT] - (18 - 23 y.o., caucasian, slender, dark hair, goofy) Jack's best friend, Elliot is a realist. He doesn't believe in the supernatural and is enthusiastic when he speaks. After being convinced to go see a psychic and having success, Elliot is shaken. He has always wanted to find love, and feels for the first time like the forces of the world have shown him good graces. He wishes to pass this on to Jack in light of Jack's new found happiness. MAJOR ROLE

[PSYCHIC] - (40 - 60 y.o., male, caucasian, built, full head of dark brown hair, possibly with gray throughout as well, business-like (think Harvey Keitel in Reservoir Dogs)) The Psychic is a confident older man in a suit and tie. He is jovial and energetic, all the while keeping a cool and collected composure. He is mysterious and gives no background to his methods or upbringing. He is the man with all the answers, and he knows it. He anxious to lend his services to those he likes. There is something malicious about him that you can't put your finger on. MAJOR ROLE

[DIANA] - (18 - 23 y.o., caucasian, slender, exquisitely clean and beautiful face, voice of an angel) The answer to Jack's prayers, Diana is a siren that draws him to her with her beautiful singing voice. Diana is sweet, soft, sincere. She has been singing at the same nightclub for months and months and no one has ever realized her beauty the way Jack has. Diana is a hopeless romantic, and her dream seems to have been actualized in the form of Jack on this particular night. MAJOR ROLE

[EVELYN] - (45 - 55 y.o., caucasian, motherly-figure, emotion-evoking eyes) Evelyn loves her son, Jack, more than anything in the world. She was devastated when he lost his hearing as a boy, and seeing him gain his hearing back again is the greatest thing to happen to her in 15 years. She a genuine and loving individual and it shows through her eyes. (3 lines, 2 scenes)

[MARY] - (40 - 55 y.o., hispanic, brown eyes, brown hair, glasses) A lady with a calm nature about her, Mary is a woman who naturally exudes wiseness and experience. You wouldn't be surprised if she told you she was clairvoyant. (2 lines, 1 scene)

[EAR DOCTOR] - (30 - 50 y.o., female, any ethnicity, average height & build) (2 lines, 1 scene)

[WAITRESS] - (30 - 40 y.o., female, caucasian, red or brown hair, average height & build) Your average restaurant employee. Disinterested, impatient, ready to go home. (1 line, 1 scene)

[BAND MEMBERS] - (18 - 22 y.o., any ethnicity, grungy nightclub-type, unkempt) (1 line, 1 scene)

[GRANDMOTHER] - (65 - any y.o., caucasian, "sweet-old-lady'' type) A loving and affectionate grandmother of Jack with a big, genuine smile. (1 line, 1 scene)

[YOUNG JACK] - (10-12 years old y.o., caucasian, slender, dark hair) Sickly and confused, Young Jack has lost his hearing due to a very high fever. (1 scene)

[ELLIOT'S GIRL] - (18 - 21 y.o., Asian, short, cute face) Quiet and lovable, the girl of Elliot's dreams laughs and loves with no question once she meets him. (1 scene)

[UNCLE] - (40 - 55 y.o., caucasian, cheerful, slightly overweight) (1 scene)

[ELLIOT'S GIRL'S FRIEND] - (18 - 21 y.o., Asian, short, cute face) (1 scene)

[CHILD ON THE COUCH] - (7 - 10 y.o., male, any ethnicity, fierce looking) A mysterious boy who sits on the couch in the psychic's home watching television. (1 scene)

[RELATIVES (7 EXTRAS)] - (30 - any y.o., male and female, caucasian) (1 scene)

[PATRONS OF RESTAURANT (3 EXTRAS)] - (35 - 55 y.o., any ethnicity, males and female) (1 scene)

STORY LINE: Jack, a boy who lost his hearing at age 11, is finally able to hear again thanks to cochlear implant ten years later. The Edge of the Woods Casting

We received the below casting notice from one of our clients. This is all the information we have on this. If you have any questions please direct them directly to Matt's email.

Hello Everyone,

I’m working with director Grainger David to cast his SAG short film called The Edge of the Woods.  It’s a very quality project that has already won several production awards, including a $75,000 grant from the South Carolina Film Commission, and a camera package from Panavision.  The visual effects company Framestore (Harry Potter, Captain America, The Smurfs, Salt) has signed on as a co-producer to create the creature in the film.

The project falls under the SAG Ultra Low-Budget agreement.  Travel, accommodations and per diem will be provided in addition to the day rate ($100/8hours - $175/12 hours).  The film will be shot in Charleston, SC or Columbia, SC in early 2012.

Instructions for submission are copied below as well as attached to this email.  The cast breakdown and sides will come in a separate email, which will be sent out shortly.

Thank you all for your continued help and support.  Please let me know if you have any questions!!

Sincerely,

Matt Sefick

Synopsis:
The Edge of the Woods is a 15-minute live-action short film about an 11-year old girl who is trying to convince her parents to let her keep the pet monster that lives in their basement. Alice lives in a world that looks every bit like rural, 1930s America. But her small town hides a dark secret. In fact, Alice is one of the last children to grow up with a Thing - a small, misshapen, watery-eyed creature that wandered in from the woods on the day she was born. Alice's parents are conflicted about her strange "pet",  but when the Thing escapes one night and disturbs a neighbor's trash, the local sheriff is called and Alice and her father are forced to bend to the community will. Their long, sad walk to the family's Thing graveyard in the woods builds to a deeply heart-wrenching conclusion.

Bio:
Grainger David is a director and screenwriter from Wadmalaw Island, SC. He is a graduate of Princeton University and received his MFA in Directing from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, where he held the WTC Johnson Fellowship. His previous short films have played in festivals around the world. Grainger has also worked as a gas station attendant, a firewood splitter, and a National Magazine Award-nominated journalist, and he once interviewed the President of Mongolia. He is currently in pre-production on his 2011-12 South Carolina Production Fund-winning short film, The Edge of the Woods.

Instructions for Submission:

I would like to present the best possible auditions to the director of The Edge of the Woods.  Therefore, I ask that you follow the instructions listed below when making your submissions.  If your actors self-tape and submit their own auditions, please make sure they follow the below instructions as well.

Please send auditions ONLY to this email address – marker96casting@gmail.com.

Please do not upload audition videos to any public site for any reason.

Before the submission process begins, please consider the following:

-  The Edge of the Woods is a SAG Ultra Low-Budget project and will pay those rates - $100/8 hours up to $175/12 hours.  Travel, accommodations, and per diem will be provided.

-  When recording the audition, please have the actor look at the reader (who should be right next to the camera) rather than directly into the camera lens.  There are exceptions (for instance, if the audition is for a news anchor it would be appropriate for the actor to look into the camera), but as a general rule, eye contact with the reader works best for us.  If the actor is talking to more than one person in the scene the actor should make sure that their eyes appear to move from person to person.

-  Our director has specifically requested the following – during the audition please frame the actor from their chest to their head.  And at some point – preferably in the slate - we need to see a full-body shot of the actor.

-  Please have whoever is reading with the actor read in an appropriate manner – in a low tone so as not to overpower the actor.  This is not the reader’s audition.  We do not want anything to take attention away from the actor.

-  Please have your actors audition one at a time.  For us, having 2 or more actors audition for roles in the frame together does not work.

-  It works best for the actor if they are able to memorize the role they are reading.  Having the sides there to reference is certainly acceptable, but if the actor is reading all of the material looking down, we have trouble seeing their face, and it is difficult for the producers and directors to make a selection when they cannot see what’s going on in the actor’s face.

-  Please put the slate at the END of the audition.  Also, if the actor goes from their performance straight into the slate, please have them pause for a few seconds between the audition and the slate to allow some separation.

- Additionally, please let the audition play out in its entirety for the video.  If you do not this can often cut off a reaction or something else that an actor may be doing near the end of the audition, particularly if the reader has additional lines after the actor’s last line.  It helps us if the camera stays on the actor for a couple of seconds after the audition to make sure we are seeing everything that is there.

-  The setting for the audition should as neutral as possible.  If the actor is recording the audition in their house, have them do it in front of a wall or other neutral backdrop.  We do not want the producer and director checking out the contents of the actor’s house while they should be paying attention to their performance :)

-  If the actor uses props during the audition, just be sure it does not become a scene about the prop(s).

-  Specific wardrobe is not required, but please consider the proper dress for each audition.

Please follow the below instructions for audition submissions:

-  Submit all auditions to marker96casting@gmail.com and only this address.

- If you have a question that needs more immediate attention, you will want to email that to me at sefick@slighpictures.com.

-  Along with the auditions, please send via email (to marker96casting@gmail.com) the resume and headshot of the actor.  It helps everyone if I can show the actor’s resume to the producer and director as they view the audition.  Even resumes with limited experience can be helpful.

-  The auditions should be emailed as QuickTime file attachments no larger than 25 MB (if using a PC, Windows Media or .wmv files work as well).  The current size limit for gmail attachments is 25 MB’s, so if you submit anything larger your email will not come through properly.  Even if you are using a service like ‘You Send It’ to submit, please try to keep the file size close to or below 25 MB.  If you have any questions about compressing your files, please email me at sefick@slighpictures.com and I can offer suggestions.

-  If the audition file includes multiple scenes, all scenes should be included in the one audition file, if possible.

- Correctly naming your audition file, headshot, and resume is very important for us.  Doing so allows us to efficiently organize and archive the auditions.

-  The name of the audition file should read:

ActorsFirstName.ActorsLastName.CharacterName.AgencyAbbreviation.extension (extension could be .mov, .avi, .mp4, or .wmv)

-  The name of the resume file should read:

ActorsFirstName.ActorsLastName.Resume.pdf

-  The name of the headshot file should read:

ActorsFirstName.ActorsLastName.HS.jpg

If you have any questions, please let me know.  While these instructions are very specific, they will help us get the most out of the auditions and help us present your clients in a way that benefits you and the actors as much as possible.

The cast breakdown and sides will be sent to you shortly.  If you follow the above instructions, I know that it will be a “win-win” situation for everyone when we review your audition submissions.

For the sides email Justine at justine@jpervistalent.com. ONLY IF YOU FIT THE BREAKDOWN!   Thank you all for your continued help and support.

Sincerely,

Matt Sefick

Thesis Film looking for the role of SAM

This film is entitled Rearview and it is a graduate thesis film for the Savannah College of Art and Design. The film is about  Sam, a drug-addicted rock star at the height of his success in the 1990's grunge rock scene. Sam is contemplating leaving the rock scene and life itself when he meets Heather, a young girl who is on the verge of making a lot of the same mistakes he's made. He and Heather spark a connection and, although she may not be able to save his life, his presence will change hers.

We have the majority of the roles cast but we are still looking for someone to play Sam. Sam  has been abusing drugs for awhile. So we are looking for someone who is in their 20s, skinny and has that kind of rock star charm. We prefer but are not limited to people with long blond hair and a kind of outcast look.

We are shooting in Savannah from Sept. 30-Oct. 2 and Oct. 7-9.

Chez Group Workshop

We are announcing a slight change of plan for our upcoming workshop weekend with Shay Griffin and Mari Lyn Henry August 6th and 7th.

Shay asked that I encourage each of you to invite any of your talent who you feel might benefit from this weekend workshop event. It will be an excellent opportunity for her to get to meet with them personally.

After Shay's recent seminar with Alpha Tyler, in which participants were encouraged to ask any questions they may have regarding the casting process, we realized there was not enough time in the day to get to all of the answers.

With the weekend's format that we have structured for Mari Lyn Henry's visit to Atlanta August 6th and 7th, participants of the weekend workshop will have the opportunity to visit with Shay when she is not observing and participating with Mari Lyn. They are encouraged to ask any questions regarding the casting process that they may have, whether these questions relate to the actor individually, or are general in nature.

Because Shay will be holding this open forum discussion simultaneously with Mari Lyn Henry's HOW TO BE A WORKING ACTOR workshop, we are changing the workshop location so that the two rooms will be situated next door to one another. This move will facilitate everyone's being able to rotate more conveniently in small groups between the two sessions throughout the course of the weekend.

As a reminder, the workshop details, including the new address, are as follows.

The Chez Group is excited to announce a two-day workshop weekend with Shay Griffin and Mari Lyn Henry, who will be coming to Atlanta to join Shay, the weekend of August 6th and 7th.

Mari Lyn will conduct her highly acclaimed workshop, Getting Your Act Together!, based on her best selling book, HOW TO BE A WORKING ACTOR, now in its fifth edition and more commonly referred to by actors and industry professionals as "The Bible of the Biz."

To read more of Mari Lyn's career highlights, please follow this link, http://www.chezgroup.com/mlhenry.html .

The weekend's agenda will include image enhancement, scene study, and audition technique...both on and off camera. Each participant will receive individual analysis from Mari Lyn regarding all aspects of presentation. A detailed schedule of events can be found on the training page of our website at http://www.chezgroup.com/training.html .

Shay Griffin will be on hand throughout the weekend to answer more of your talent's questions about the casting process. We have found that there is a huge demand for time devoted specifically to questions and concerns regarding auditions...and nobody is better equipped and more qualified to address the subject than casting director, Shay Griffin.

While Mari Lyn works with your talent on creating their perfect image for an audition, Shay continues the process through a Q & A session that runs in conjunction over the course of this two-day workshop.

After spending the weekend with Shay and Mari Lyn, your talent will have the necessary tools it takes to be working actors.

To purchase a copy of Mari Lyn's book, HOW TO BE A WORKING ACTOR, please follow this link to Amazon.com, http://www.amazon.com/How-Working-Actor-5th-Television/dp/0823088952/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1309226760&sr=1-1

Casting director Shay Griffin is quoted on pages 238-239 in the chapter devoted to regional markets, wherein Atlanta is designated as a "unique regional market" for the acting industry.

The minimum age requirement to attend this workshop is 15 years of age.

The hours of the workshop weekend will be Saturday and Sunday from 10 AM to 5 PM...all participants will attend both days...!

The new workshop location is the Residence Inn by Marriott Atlanta/Buckhead at 2960 Piedmont Road, NE, Atlanta, GA 30305. The hotel's phone number is 404-239-0677. If anyone should need to book a guest room, a $99 rate per night has been extended to all of our Chez Group actors. Please be sure the room is booked through the front desk to receive this special rate.

The cost of this two-day workshop is $225.

There is a PayPal button on the training page of the website. To register, please follow this link, http://www.chezgroup.com/training.html.

We look forward to seeing your talent soon. In the meantime, please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Sincerely,
Mary Ann

Upon leaving her position as Director of Casting, East Coast, for ABC, which she held for more than thirteen years, Mari Lyn launched an image and career consultation business. For many years she has taught workshops and given seminars on on-camera techniques, script analysis, marketing strategies, and impression management in cities and universities across the country, as well as in Toronto, Oxford, London, and Sydney.

Shay Griffin will also be on hand throughout the weekend to answer more questions about the casting process. We have found that there is a huge demand for time devoted specifically to questions and concerns regarding auditions...and nobody is better equipped and more qualified to address the subject than casting director, Shay Griffin.

While Mari Lyn works with your talent on creating their perfect individual image for an audition, Shay continues the process through a Q & A session that runs in conjunction over the course of this two-day workshop.

For further details on the weekend's itinerary, please follow this link, http://www.chezgroup.com/training.html

The minimum age requirement to attend this workshop is 15 years of age.

The hours of the workshop weekend will be Saturday and Sunday from 10 AM to 5 PM...all participants will attend both days...!

The workshop location is the Doubletree by Hilton Atlanta/N. Druid Hills located at 2061 N. Druid Hills Road, Atlanta, GA 30329. The hotel's phone number is 404-321-4174. If you should need to book a guest room, an $89 rate per night has been extended to all of our Chez Group actors.

The cost of this two-day workshop is $225.

To register, please follow this link, http://www.chezgroup.com/training.html.

Chez Group Workshop

The Chez Group is excited to announce that Shay Griffin and Ric Reitz will conduct their two-part seminar, Putting Your Best Professional Foot Forward, Saturday, June 18th from 10 AM to 5:30 PM!

With an influx of talent coming to Atlanta from all over the country to take advantage of the amazing opportunities in film and television that are here, it is more important than ever that your clients be at the top of their game. We appreciate your ongoing support of our workshop series by getting the word out to those clients who you feel would benefit from our program.

Putting Your Best Professional Foot Forward, with Shay Griffin and Ric Reitz , is geared towards accomplishing the following for each actor who participates:

Shay Griffin will speak from a casting director's perspective as she guides you through the important process of how to best market yourself in this highly competitive industry.

Any slight edge you can gain over your competition could mean the difference between getting a callback or not. Shay will help you navigate the important steps necessary to master the "business of the business". Topics of discussion will range from headshots and resumes to how you walk into the audition room and conduct yourself like a professional actor...including the major do's and don'ts. The morning session with Shay will run from 10 AM to 1:30 PM.

Once Shay has helped you to get the role, the last thing you want to do is lose the job because you are unprepared or uninformed. Ric Reitz will lead the afternoon session from 2 PM to 5:30 PM and will be focusing on helping you keep the job! Topics of discussion will include set etiquette and sound stage techniques. We have all heard the saying that time is money...you do not want to cost the production company money because of your lack of knowledge or your inexperience on the set...and you could ultimately lose the job!

After spending this two-part day with Shay and Ric, you will be prepared to jumpstart your professional acting career.

The cost of this one day workshop is $135. For your convenience, there is a PayPal button on the training page of the website. Here is the link, http://www.chezgroup.com/training.html .

The workshop location is the Doubletree by Hilton Atlanta/N. Druid Hills located at 2061 N. Druid Hills Road, Atlanta, GA 30329. We will be meeting on the second floor in the Dogwood Room.

We hope to see you soon. In the meantime, please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Sincerely,
Mary Ann
